THE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM AT GARVIN SCHOOL

All students at Garvin School benefit from a comprehensive technology program integrated into the curriculum. All classrooms are equipped with technology stations consisting of Apple Macintosh and/or Dell PC computers. Students use these technology stations on a regular basis. All computers in these technology stations are connected to the Internet. This allows teachers to provide students with a multitude of interactive educational activities. Some websites used by teachers to provide educational activities for students include eduplace.com, starfall.com, and kidbiz3000.com.

Classrooms at Garvin School are also equipped with SmartBoard interactive whiteboards. These interactive boards allow teachers to create engaging lessons with a wide variety of interactive components, such as animated pictures, music, and educational games related to daily educational objectives. Teachers proficient in SmartBoard usage utilize Smart Technologiesí Notebook software to create their own activities for students.

Garvin School possesses several mobile computing carts, each containing at least 20 Apple MacBook notebook computers with wireless Internet access. These state-of-the-art portable technology stations allow teachers to develop technology-rich lessons involving all of the students in their classes.

Students also receive 40 weekly minutes of additional technology instruction through a Technology special class. In these classes, students learn about a wide variety of computer applications, such as word processors, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing programs, and web browsers. They also learn about how computers and technology can be used to solve (and sometimes create) problems. A large component of the Technology class consists of the EasyTech program, a technology education program consisting of a wide variety of interactive online activities and related technology projects.

Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kits are used to help students learn basics about construction, engineering, and coding through activities conducted periodically during Technology special classes. Several robotics projects have been featured at the annual East Orange School District STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Fair. †††††††

The components of the Garvin Technology Program ensure that our students will receive the foundation necessary to become productive citizens in an increasingly technology-infused society. Through the support of all of the members of the Garvin staff, it is hoped that our students will be able to effectively use technology for positive purposes throughout their lives.
